About This Project

What is the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel project?

Since 2019, Protecnium has continued to strengthen its position in the United States market and has actively participated in the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project, providing specialized technical professionals for one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the state of Virginia.

The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, also known as HRBT, is a strategic connection measuring approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) and forms part of Interstate 64 (I-64) and US Route 60. The existing infrastructure combines bridges, trestle viaducts, artificial islands and tunnels beneath the main navigation channels of the Port of Hampton Roads in southeastern Virginia. The Hampton Roads Tunnel Expansion is transforming this vital transportation corridor into one of the region’s most important infrastructure assets.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion: one of Virginia’s largest infrastructure projects

The expansion project, with an estimated investment of 3.9 billion dollars, is considered by VDOT, the Virginia Department of Transportation, to be the largest highway project in Virginia’s history. Its objective is to improve capacity, reduce congestion and increase traffic reliability along a corridor of almost 10 miles on I-64 through the construction of new two-lane bored tunnels and the expansion of existing sections in Hampton and Norfolk.

This major Hampton Roads Bridge Project plays a key role in modernizing the region’s transportation infrastructure and improving mobility for thousands of commuters every day. The Hampton Roads Tunnel Expansion is one of the most ambitious civil engineering developments currently underway in the United States.

Specialized engineering professionals supporting the HRBT Expansion

Within this context, Protecnium has contributed highly qualified professionals in key areas throughout the execution of this major civil engineering project within the HRBT, including:
  • Field surveyors, specialized in monitoring and controlling the tunnel boring machine, a critical function in underground construction where alignment, progress and positioning accuracy are essential for excavation safety and quality.

  • Surveyors for MEP installations, responsible for the control and coordination of mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations. In projects of this scale, MEP work is essential for integrating systems such as ventilation, electricity, lighting, drainage, pumping, fire protection, communications and other services required for the safe operation of tunnels and associated infrastructure.

  • Drafters, providing technical support for the preparation, updating and coordination of drawings, construction documentation, construction details and as built documentation, helping to maintain traceability between design, execution and the project’s final deliverables.

  • Tunnel Survey Manager, leading the coordination of surveying activities associated with the tunnel works, supervising procedures, data control and resource planning, while ensuring proper integration between design, production and field execution.

  • Head of Survey, leading the planning, coordination and supervision of the surveying teams, ensuring data consistency, control traceability and effective interaction between design, production and quality control.

  • Shift engineers, responsible for coordinating construction activities, supervising production work, ensuring compliance with procedures and supporting technical problem solving during project execution.
